Third edition. The explorer and naturalist Trevor-Battye (1855-1922) reached Kolguyev Island in northern Russia in June 1894 aboard the steam yacht Saxon. ‘Along with his assistant Thomas Hyland ... and his spaniel, Trevor-Battye was left with supplies and an agreement to be collected by the vessel after one month. An extensive study of the flora and fauna of the island was made, with special attention to its breeding birds, and the island was partly mapped. Unfortunately the Saxon suffered a breakdown and it was impossible to keep the return appointment ... The explorers were therefore marooned on the island. Friendly contact with Samoyed (Nenets) reindeer herders enabled them to leave in September. They then had a 1000 mile journey across northern Russia to Archangel in the season of rasputnya, when travel was normally deemed impossible. Their arduous and sometimes dangerous journey took them almost five weeks.’ (ODNB).

Quadrille Figures, as danced at the Quadrille Assemblies, St. Helier’s, Jersey.

Unrecorded pocket dance callbook printed on Jersey. One of the most popular ballroom dances of the nineteenth century, with elaborate steps danced by sets of couples in a square formation, the quadrille, which comprised a series of four or five linked dances, had its origins in the cotillion of the eighteenth century. Quadrilles were being danced in England at the turn of the century, imported from France, but it was the publication of sets of quadrilles by Edward Payne and James Paine in 1815–6, and its use at the Carlton House Ball of 1816, that catapulted the dance to enormous popularity. Most of the individual dances had French names – ‘La Trompette Guerrière’, ‘Les Lanciers’, ‘Le Fugitif’, ‘La Chinoise’; while ‘La McFarlin’ here was likely based on a Scottish reel.

Second edition of Fenton’s Golden Epistles, first published 1575. The title echoes Antonio de Guevara’s Golden Book of Marcus Aurelius and the work forms a kind of supplement to Edward Hellowes’s translation of Guevara’s Familiar Epistles (first 1574, with which it is frequently bound) but Fenton here draws on many more authors than Guevara. The result is ‘a moral discourse sorted with philosophie, & some texts of divinitie’ that was widely read in Elizabethan times.
